During the Roots to Blooms journey across Africa, Southside Blooms youth visited Elmina Castle in Cape Coast, Ghana, one of the most important historical sites connected to the transatlantic slave trade.
Built over 500 years ago, Elmina Castle served as a major holding point where enslaved Africans were imprisoned before being transported across the Atlantic.
For the youth visiting today, walking through the castle and its dungeons transforms historical knowledge into a deeply personal experience. It offers an opportunity to reflect on the past, reconnect with heritage, and understand the resilience of those who came before.
To honor the history of this place, the Southside Blooms youth team created a floral tribute at the site, using flowers as a symbol of remembrance, reflection, and hope.
This visit is part of the broader Roots to Blooms pilgrimage across Africa, where youth explore historical sites, connect with their ancestry, and deepen their understanding of culture, history, and legacy.
