Ambassador William Burns is the president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the oldest international affairs think tank in the United States. Ambassador Burns retired from the U.S. Foreign Service in 2014 after a thirty-three-year diplomatic career. He served as the United States ambassador to Russia and as the ambassador to Jordan. He was also the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs and the Deputy Secretary of State. Ambassador Burns holds the highest rank in the U.S. Foreign Service, career ambassador. He is the author of "The Back Channel: A Memoir of American Diplomacy and the Case for Its Renewal," which was published in 2019.
