The Book of Disquiet is a posthumously published, fragmentary masterpiece by Portuguese modernist writer Fernando Pessoa, presented as the diary or "factless autobiography" of his semi-heteronym, Bernardo Soares, an assistant bookkeeper in Lisbon, filled with melancholic, existential reflections on dreams, reality, isolation, and the self, exploring the paradoxes of consciousness, identity, and life's futility through aphorisms and prose-poetry. Written over 100 years ago, its themes and form of expression remain relevant and resonant.
