Port Alberni - One man is dead and two women lucky to be alive after a tubing accident on the Stamp Falls late Sunday afternoon.
The friends from Qualicum Beach unexpectedly found themselves in rushing rapids on the Stamp River near the Stamp River Provincial Park Campground in Port Alberni.
The three were thrashed from their inner tubes as they entered the portion of the river known as the Stamp Falls.
The body of 22-year-old Cory Donald Heinz was spotted floating in the river just after the falls. BC Coroners Officer confirmed Monday that Heinz drowned and was pulled from the river by a passer-by,
The two women, also in their early twenties, managed to find their way to adjacent rock beds beside the rushing water but found themselves in an extremely dangerous and precarious situation.
The Alberni Valley Search and Rescue was called into the area and preformed a "very challenging and difficult rescue" of the two girls.
The rescue included two kayaks and a team using rope to propel down the side of the cliff. After several hours the girls were removed from the rivers edge and taken to hospital. They were released and are now recovering with minor injuries.
The RCMP in Port Alberni issued a warning on June 26th after four friends narrowly escaped with their lives after a similar tubing accident.
The River is known as one of most dangerous and fatal rivers for outdoor recreation on Vancouver Island.
