Hoyt Curtin! Musical hero of the Hanna-Barbera Animation Studio. I wasn't even aware of his name until I started work on this project. During a long career in Hollywood he wrote the theme tunes for The Flintstones, The Jetsons, The Smurfs, The New Scooby Doo Movies and of course, Top Cat!
Taking down the original arrangement as closely as possible before adapting it for a Big Band of trombones was an exercise in musical archaeology. The Final mix used for the cartoons was very heavy on the vocal parts, but behind, you can just hear a roaring big band swinging its arse off!
Hoyt's drummer on the original session was Alvin Stoller. Dave Tandy does a fantastic job here recreating that great swinging sound.
