PhD Candidate, Institute for Quantum Electronics, ETH Zürich
Zijie Zhu obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Peking University and his Master’s degree in Physics from ETH Zürich. He is currently pursuing his PhD in the Tilman Esslinger Group at the Institute for Quantum Electronics, ETH Zürich. His research focuses on quantum optics and ultracold atoms in optical lattices, with results published in Science, Nature Physics, and Physical Review Letters.
Talk: “Quantum Simulation with Ultracold Atomic Gases”
In this talk, Zijie Zhu will introduce the fascinating world of quantum simulation using ultracold atomic gases — a rapidly developing research field at the intersection of quantum physics and condensed matter.
The session will begin with the definition and preparation of ultracold atoms, followed by an exploration of their behavior in optical lattices — artificial crystal structures formed by laser light. Zhu will then present his group’s latest work on the quantum Hall effect, demonstrating how ultracold atoms can be used as a versatile platform to model complex quantum materials, including those with superconducting and topological properties.
This talk offers an exciting glimpse into how quantum simulators based on ultracold atoms are reshaping our understanding of quantum many-body systems and emergent phenomena in modern physics.
