[Hallyu People] The K-wave and Korea-Thai ties through the eyes of Thailand's Ambassador

Diplomatic relations between Korea and Thailand have spanned more than 67 years, built on a long-standing foundation of friendship and cooperation. At the heart of this partnership is a figure who has witnessed this cultural exchange firsthand and serves as a bridge connecting the two countries—the Thai Ambassador to Korea.
With a deep understanding of both traditional and contemporary culture in Korea and Thailand, the Ambassador has played a key role in bringing the two nations closer together. Through cultural events, exchanges in Korean Wave content, and cooperation in tourism and education, he has helped foster stronger people-to-people ties. We are now joined by H.E. Tanee Sangrat, Ambassador of Thailand to the Republic of Korea. Welcome, Ambassador Sangrat!


Q1. You officially began your term in Korea in May 2024. Looking back on your time in office so far, what achievements or changes have felt most meaningful to you?



Q2. During your tenure, you’ve had a close view of the growth in cultural exchange between Korea and Thailand.
Has this experience influenced your own diplomatic philosophy or perspective?


Q3. Thai artists such as BLACKPINK’s Lisa, GOT7’s BamBam and 2PM’s Nichkhun have gained global recognition as K-pop stars.
In your view, what kind of opportunities does Korea’s content industry offer to Thailand’s cultural talent?


Q4. Thailand has long been considered one of the core markets for the Korean Wave. Based on your experience working in Korea, how would you describe the current level of enthusiasm for K-pop and other aspects of the K-wave in Thailand?


Q5. Has the popularity of the Korean Wave led to increased tourism to Korea from Thailand?
Is this something you’ve observed firsthand?


Q6. Joint Korea–Thailand content production has emerged as an example of cultural industry cooperation.
What elements of Korean content do you think Thai audiences find particularly appealing?


Q6-1. Conversely, what do you see as the key strengths of Thai content that Korea could learn from?


Q7. Thailand and Korea have been holding various business forums in each respective country, such as the "IGNITE Thailand-Korea Business Forum 2025". How do such forums contribute to the strengthening of cultural ties between the two countries?


Q7-1. From your perspective, how do the discussions and exchanges built through this forum (these forums) contribute to long-term, sustainable cultural cooperation beyond a one-off event?


QA. As you prepare for your next steps, what direction do you hope Korea–Thailand cultural exchanges will take in the future?


QB. There is a growing trend among Thai people to learn the Korean language.
How do you think young people with Korean language skills will influence industrial development in both Thailand and Korea?
