The sixth installment of the monthly series "Where is New York?*"

Via Verde in the South Bronx offers a new vision of affordable housing: "a light, airy complex that curls around a skinny lot, rising from townhouses to a tower and inviting neighbors to gather in its open-air amphitheater or stroll through a series of rooftop gardens spread out across multiple levels, like a miniature Bronx Versailles," according to New York Magazine. The new development builds health and wellness into its design—foregrounding stairwells, a gym, and open space—in an underserved section of the city that was once left to famously burn under municipal cuts to fire departments and federal and urban renewal funds under President Richard Nixon. Are the difficult legacies of this social and political neglect redressed in the design of Via Verde? What lessons does it offer to other communities seeking equity, access, and environmental justice?

This conversation with the architects and developers key to this building's realization will explore the physical and financial mechanisms leveraged to create affordability at Brook Avenue and East 156th Street in the South Bronx. #wood032612
