Marcia was an active and sporting single mum in her mid-40s when she started to be troubled with what she was being told were purely gynaecological problems.
Her symptoms spiralled alarmingly, yet a proper diagnosis eluded her. It was only the intervention of her sister, Maureen, a nurse, that led to the overwhelming diagnosis of a triple whammy of dilated cardiomyopathy, heart failure and mitral regurgitation.
Fortunately, she came under the care of Prof. Carr-White, who worked with her on a treatment plan. He also put her in contact with the patient group, Cardiomyopathy UK, which she describes as her "lifeline".
She found a community of people who understood what she was going through. Moreover, she is giving back by sharing her experiences and wise counsel with new patients as a Change Maker for Cardiomyopathy UK.
