This engine came with the 1966 13' Boston Whaler I am restoring. It's a 1988 Johnson 40hp outboard. I've started some of the fiberglass work on the boat but really wanted to see if this engine was worth using. Although premature, I've done a few things to get this beast going. First, I had to unfreeze the tilt tube to lower it (as well as getting the steering rod loose. Next I rebuilt both of the carbs as they were completely sludged up. As long as the carbs were already off, I decided to pull the intake manifold and reeds out to clean and inspect them. Based on what the last owner told me, this engine hasn't been run in over twenty years. I could only hope that it did! Surprisingly, the engine started and ran strong! I'll be running compression checks in the future to see where the motor is at in terms of wear but hearing this outboard run was a pure pleasure.
