I had the chance to explore one of the most fascinating places just outside the Damascus Gate of Jerusalem’s Old City – the Paulus-Haus. This impressive German-built pilgrim hospice stands like a fortress, its architecture reminding us of crusader castles, yet it carries a very different story of faith, history, and hospitality.
Walking through its halls, I visited the Paulus-Haus Museum, where the German Association of the Holy Land preserves unique treasures. Among them are archaeological finds connected to the time of Jesus and two extraordinary scale models of the Temple, crafted by the famous Jerusalem architect and researcher Conrad Schick. These models alone are worth the visit – they allow you to imagine how the Temple once stood in the heart of the city.
From there, I climbed to the rooftop terrace, which offers one of the best views you can find in Jerusalem. Standing on that roof, I could see the Mount of Olives, the Dome of the Rock, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the walls of the Old City spread out before me. It’s a place where history, faith, and the beauty of Jerusalem come together in a breathtaking panorama.
What makes the Paulus-Haus so special is not only its history – built in the early 1900s to welcome German pilgrims after Kaiser Wilhelm II’s visit to the Holy Land – but also the way it connects past and present. It was used as a government building during the British Mandate, survived wars and changes, and today it continues to welcome visitors who want to understand Jerusalem from a unique perspective.
For me, this visit was more than just sightseeing. It was a journey into the layered history of Jerusalem, guided by faith, vision, and the desire to preserve the memory of the Holy Land. Filming inside the museum and standing on the rooftop reminded me once again why Jerusalem is not just a city of stone, but a city of spirit.
I’m excited to share this experience with you in my video. Join me on this tour of the Paulus-Haus, a place where architecture, archaeology, and faith meet, right at the gates of the Old City.
