In this video, I model a vanity tray in CATIA, inspired by the Rivian headlamp design.
That oval “stadium” shape is a strong, clean geometry, and it works extremely well for interior storage parts. I start from this base form and build the model using Part Design, keeping everything fully parametric and production-oriented.
What’s covered in this video:
Setting up core parameters (length, width, height, wall thickness)
Linking parameters to sketches and features so the model updates consistently
Creating the outer volume using Pad + Shell
Shaping the inner cavity with inside thickness control
Using a generous bottom radius (R15) for manufacturability and design intent
Creating the characteristic openings inspired by the Rivian headlamp graphic
Building patterned ribs, mirroring them, and removing material with Boolean operations
This workflow allows fast exploration of proportions without rebuilding geometry. Change a value, and the whole part adapts. It’s the same approach I use on production parts, where design intent, manufacturability, and visual identity all need to work together.
If you work with CATIA and care about clean structure, parametric control, and real-world modeling practices, this one’s for you.
