The US Navy was the first in the world to develop a comprehensive ship-based air defense system, AEGIS, which included powerful electronically scanning radar panels fitted to destroyers and cruisers as well as a series of medium to long-range Surface to Air missiles (SAM). This was primarily intended to protect US carriers from missile attacks. Later, European nations adopted this concept and introduced their own air defense destroyers with comparable capabilities.
The Arleigh Burke class is the most famous American destroyer in this category, and the British Type-45 Daring class is the most famous European counterpart. Both the American and British navies claim to have the world's most powerful air defense ships.
