This video invites you to explore the heart of the Ecuadorian Chocó in Esmeraldas province, a territory of Afro-descendant, Awá, and Chachi communities committed to protecting their forests, waters, and culture.
With Andes Amazon Fund’s support of Fundación Paisajes Sostenibles (PASOS) and other global allies, a shared vision emerged:
✅ Hydrological Protection Area (APH) – 54,539 hectares guaranteeing water for over 28,000 people in 66 settlements.
✅ Conservation and Sustainable Use Area (ACUS) – 70,486 hectares protecting biodiversity and ancestral knowledge.
This forms a vital corridor connecting to Cotacachi Cayapas National Park and Manglares Cayapas Mataje Ecological Reserve.
Here, conservation is hands-on: cultivating sustainable cocoa, harvesting shellfish in living mangroves, creating sustainable enterprises, and preserving memory through the marimba.
San Lorenzo reminds us that protecting nature is protecting identity, joy, and the future.
