Hanish Islands Conflict: Battle for the Red Sea

Описание: Largely forgotten nowadays, the Hanish Islands Conflict back in the mid-1990s pitted a newly independent Eritrea against a unified Yemen. The cause: a strategic archipelago in the middle of the Red Sea.

Consisting of three major islands - Jabal Zuqar, Greater Hanish, and Little Hanish - alongside more than 23 smaller islands, islets, and partially submerged rocks, the Hanish Islands are now mostly under the control of Sanaa. This wasn't always the case, however, as they were claimed by the Kingdom of Italy as part of the colony of Eritrea back in the late 1930s. When that African country gained independence in 1993, Asmara laid claim to the Hanish Islands. The only problem was that Yemen also claimed the islands as its own.

Negotiations between the countries ultimately broke down and, in 1995, Eritrea decided to take the Hanish Islands by force.
