Nestled in the serene environment of Okinawa, this concrete house stands as a remarkable blend of modern architecture and traditional cultural values. Designed by IGArchitects, this 83 m² residence was built for a married couple on a long, narrow site that slopes gently toward the back. Surrounded by apartments and a cemetery, the location provides a unique challenge—balancing privacy, connection to nature, and an open, bright atmosphere.
The house takes inspiration from the traditional tombs of Okinawa, known for their resilience against the harsh climate and their cultural significance. Its pyramid-like form exudes permanence and elegance, embodying the spirit of a structure built to last for generations. The exterior design ensures privacy with limited openings while maintaining a dignified and timeless aesthetic.
Inside, the layout features three levels, each serving specific functions. The first level houses the bathroom and entrance, while the second level, one meter lower, contains the living and dining areas along with a study. The third level is dedicated to private spaces, including the bedroom. The design harmonizes concrete and wooden materials, creating a serene, light-filled interior that feels warm and inviting.
The use of Ryukyu limestone and the pyramid shape reflects the architects’ desire to create a structure that is both stable and deeply rooted in Okinawan tradition. The tomb-like appearance is a nod to the enduring heritage of the region, blending functionality with cultural reverence.
This home exemplifies how modern architecture can respect and integrate the wisdom of the past. Join us in exploring this extraordinary residence, where innovation meets tradition, and discover the story behind its unique design.
