The idea of such bridge courses needs to be examined critically. It is to be recognized that these so called alternative medical 'systems' are all unscientific and the practice of awarding basic 'medical' degrees in these 'systems' should be stopped. Any bridge course is appropriate only after this crucial measure, and is to be considered as a one time rehabilitation procedure for existing graduates. The current suggestion to continue with courses in 'alternative medicine' and allowing practitioners of such systems to practice modern medicine is ill advised and dangerous.
In this presentation, Dr.Viswanathan compares unscientific attempts to 'bridge' science based medicine and alternative medicine to the building of "Panchavadippalam", referring to the classic Malayalam movie of that name. The motive behind such bridge building is not to help people, but to further material interests of powerful people. These bridges are bound to fail when put under the mildest test and at that point, those who suffer will be the most disadvantaged people in the society.
