A fusion of uptempo blues and hoedown country to have prospered between 1954 and 1957, it was performed largely by artists who traded legitimate country backgrounds for a short lived but frenzied involvement in music with a beat.
Suitably commercialized, rockabilly eventually created a teenage market of unimagined proportions but, originally a true and honest folk music, its appeal was too localized for major record companies to promote or even record it.
