After spending some more time experimenting with the "auto-land" feature of the F1's autopilot, I thought it might be worth putting another video together demonstrating how it looks in poor weather.
Some lessons have been learned in the time since the first auto-landing video I uploaded.
Firstly, DCS navigation aids are not always reliable. Not every ILS station has glideslope guidance, for example (Syria has at least a couple of these, including Ramat David). VORs do not include DME equipment, although I believe there are some VORTACs which will provide distance measurement.
Secondly, there's some rather strange behavior in the autopilot. For example, when the F1 is landing with external stores and 50-60% internal fuel, there are some extreme pitch oscillations in the last ten seconds or so before touchdown. As another example, having the glideslope mode enabled when you are above the glideslope can produce an unrecoverable dive which seemed to include full nose forward trim.
So just treat everything as a work in progress and be ready to take manual control or find another approach to fly.
Thanks for watching!
