Syringomas are benign (harmless) growths coming from our sweat gland ducts. We usually see them around the eyes, but they can also pop up under the arms and in the groin. While benign, they can cause people to feel self conscious and I”ve had many patients over the years asking if they can be removed.
Unfortunately, unlike milia, which are also very common in this area, these are much more challenging to treat. These often require aggressive treatments like CO2 lasers or surgical excision to see any improvement. These procedures carry risks, the syringomas often recur, and most people only get minimal improvement in the end.
I often counsel my patients that less is more with syringomas. Women between 40 and 60 are most likely to see these pop up.
