In this video, I am pruning AUTUMN FRUITING or primocane raspberries. These fruit on wood that has grown earlier the same year.
All you need to do is to cut them to the ground after fruiting (this can wait until as late as Jan/Feb if you are struggling for time).
If you can manage, it is a great idea to mulch deeply after pruning - access is easy, and it will help with nutrient availability, soil structure, and water retention for the coming summer. Raspberries love leafould or garden compost, or even woodchip, but only if it is well aged (new woodchip is too high in carbon, and will rob the soil around the roots of precious nitrogen).
If you’re not sure whether you have an autumn or summer fruiting variety, I suggest you cut everything down to the ground, then see whether the canes fruit the following summer. If they do, you have Autumn fruiters, and if they don’t, you have summer fruiters.
To prune Summer fruiters, just cut back the canes that have had berries on, and leave the fresher looking, newer canes that haven’t fruited - they will bear berries next year…
