Marc Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, testified at a House Oversight Hearing on Police Practices and Accountability on Wednesday that the loss of black lives at the hands of police since Trayvon Martin’s death in 2012 are akin to modern-day lynchings.
“George Floyd was lynched on the streets of Minneapolis,” Morial said. “And the world...has risen up, in mainly peaceful protest, to say enough is enough, and black lives matter.”
Morial said the Justice in Policing Act proposed by Congressional Democrats represents an “opportunity in a historic time in American history” for elected representatives. He added that “this is not the time for a de minimis, backroom, Washington political compromise,” but for “bold and courageous action.”
Morial praised the legislation’s push to ban chokeholds, no-knock warrants and racial profiling, as well as efforts to create “a multi-tiered accountability system” in policing. “I’m asking this body and the U.S. Senate to recognize the gravity of this moment and the importance of this time,” said Morial, urging the body to “stand with the people of this nation.”
