Another day, another railtour and in the middle of, near enough, a monsoon.
Our travels take us to...Glasgow Central, for the start of 'The Clyde Aberdonian' railtour, led by LNER Peppercorn A1 Class no. 60163 'Tornado', working up to Aberdeen and back.
Tornado is, currently, the only example of the LNER Peppercorn A1 Class steam locomotive in existence and, even then, it's not an original, given that all original examples of the class were scrapped. There were attempts to preserve an original example, following its retirement but this, ultimately, failed and all locomotives disappeared in 1966.
In 1990, the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust was formed with the intention of building a brand new steam locomotive from scratch. Work on Tornado began in 1994 and, after fourteen years and £3 million spent on construction, Tornado was completed by 2008 and began operations in early 2009.
The locomotive was first propelled into the mainstream limelight in June 2009, when it was featured on Top Gear. In that feature, the train, with Jeremy Clarkson on the footplate, raced against co-presenters James May in a Jaguar XK120 and Richard Hammond on a Vincent Black Shadow motorcycle between London and Edinburgh.
Since then, Tornado has been a continuous sight on the UK railtour scene, still owned and maintained by the A1 Trust and still operating a variety of railtours across the country.
