How to Paint Atmosphere: A Foggy Beach Scene

Описание: I went to the beach planning to paint and photograph a clear coastal scene—but the weather never cooperated. The fog never lifted, and at first it felt like a wasted trip.

Instead of forcing a scene that wasn’t there, I decided to lean into what I did see. I’ve always admired paintings that capture fog, atmosphere, and quiet distance, so in this video I challenge myself to paint a foggy beach scene.

In this demo, I talk through the strategies I use to imply distance and atmosphere, including:

Using value compression to suggest fog
Controlling contrast to push elements back
Letting the mood guide color choices

This video is part painting demonstration and part reminder that not every painting starts with perfect conditions. Sometimes the most interesting work comes from adjusting expectations and responding to what’s in front of you.
