Eight avatars were taken by Lord Ganesha to protect people from eight kinds of self-destructing habits – (Jealousy, Drunkenness, Delusion, Greed, anger, Lust, Ignorance, Pride). Hindu mythology says that these eight elements contribute the most to affect human lives.

#Vakratunda : This is the first avatar of Lord Ganesha. Ganesha took this avatar to subdue a demon named Matsara, the demon of jealousy. 

#Ekadanta : Lord Ganesha took this avatar to subdue Madasur, a demon with special powers, and high on alcohol and arrogance. Ganesha in Ekadanta avatar shows us that intoxication can fill one with pride beyond control.

#Mahodara : This incarnation of lord ganesha vanquished the demon Mohasura, the demon of delusion and confusion.

#Gajanana : Gajanana means ‘the Lord with the elephant face. Lord Ganesha took this avatar to fight ‘Lobha’ the demon of greed. Lord Ganesha took the avatar to free the world from greed as it leads to many other immoral behaviour.

#Lambodara : This is another avatar of Ganesh to subdue Krodhasura, the demon of anger. The human life is greatly influenced by ‘Krodh’ and Lord Ganesha plays a huge role in shackling it.

#Vikata : Lord Ganesha took this incarnation to subdue Kama, the demon of desire. Kamasura, the embodiment of lust, was born out of the seeds of Lord Vishnu.

#Vighnaraj : This is the most popular incarnation of Lord Ganesha. Vighnaraja defeated the demon of attachment mamtasur. The avatar of Vighnaraj is known as the ‘Remover of all Obstacles’.

#Dhumravana : Lord Ganesha took this avatar to defeat the demon Ahamkarasur, the demon of pride.

Defeating demons of eight destructive habits : Vikata -Kaam (lust), Lambodara - Krodh (wrath or anger), Ekadanta - Mada (drunkenness), Gajanana - Lobh (greed), Vakratunda - Matsar (jealousy), Mahodara - (delusion), Dhumravana - Ahankar (pride) and Vighnaraja -Agyan (ignorance).
