New York Wildflowers and Unique Native Plant Communities

Dr. Bruce Gilman shares his knowledge on the beautiful wildflowers that color the spaces surrounding us. He also discusses the unique plant communities that exist within specific environments.

Dr. Bruce Gilman has recently retired from the Department of Environmental Conservation and Horticulture at Finger Lakes Community College where he taught for 42 years. His teaching expertise included aquatic ecology, field botany, glacial geology, agronomy and environmental science. He continues to curate the Finger Lakes Herbarium, a collection of over 18,000 plant specimens representative of western New York, and is preparing an updated edition of his 1983 publication, Ontario County Flora. His wealth of botanical knowledge is regularly shared with general public through walks and lectures sponsored by many regional organizations. During his tenure at the college, Bruce was the Director of the Environmental Studies Program as well as Director of the college’s Muller Field Station located in the southern Honeoye Valley. Dr. Gilman received his PhD in Ecology from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Syracuse NY.

He has continued to author technical reports that include natural resource inventories, land use/land cover maps for local towns, and field studies of established and emerging invasive species. Of interest is his service on the Steering Committee and Working Groups of the Finger Lakes Partnership for Invasive Species Management (FL-PRISM). Bruce annually assist in water quality monitoring on Honeoye Lake, serves on the lake’s harmful algal blooms (HABs) steering committee, and presents as a regional expert on these emerging topics.

Bruce has received the Friend of the Lake award for his Canandaigua Lake research, the Friend of the Land award for his volunteer efforts with The Nature Conservancy, and the Lake Tear of the Clouds award to recognize his studies in several New York State lakes.

Bruce resides with his wife, Margo, on a 15 acre property in Middlesex, NY, and keeps busy tending their organic garden, small orchard and large raspberry patch.
