A fourth-quarter surge from Illinois dealt No. 7 Maryland its first loss of the season in a 73-70 road conference defeat on Thursday afternoon.
Illinois got the bulk of its production from sophomore Berry Wallace, who tallied 22 points and seven rebounds on New Year's Day,
Yarden Garzon played a big role for Maryland (14-1, 2-1 B1G) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Saylor Poffenbarger helped the offense find its flow, dishing six assists as a part of her 15-point, eight-rebound game.
Oluchi Okananwa posted her sixth straight game in double-figure scoring. She scored 12 points in a competitive first half that saw Maryland take a 39-34 lead into the break.
Maryland got most of its production from inside the paint. The Terps outrebounded the Fighting Illini (3-1, 3-0) 39-30 and battled for 42 points in the paint while benefiting from 16 bench points.
