What is an expression?
An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that can contain ordinary numbers, variables (like x or y) and operators (like add, subtract, multiply, and divide).
How do you value an expression? The variable in the expression is substituted or replaced by the value of the variable. For example x +5 when x =4 becomes (4) + 5. The value is then calculating using addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, or another operator following the order of operations. The value of the expression is equal to the value you end up with. In our example (4) + 5 becomes 9.
