Immanuel Kant regarded his third critique as his most important, uniting his first two. The continental philosophical tradition followed him in thus seeing the new philosophical branch of aesthetics as central to the discipline. The consequences are enormous, but for Kant they were at least a tacit attempt to unite beauty to goodness and truth in his system. That unity was a feature of the medieval synthesis, and found its essence in the character of God.
Kant followed Edmund Burke's desynonymisation of beauty and sublimity, but traced it less to two discrete stimuli than, following his Copernican 'subjective turn', to different capacities of the mind to perceive objects. The mind's autonomy in the work of the imagination had, for him, now been fully established.
