Small reef fish nibble on this algae, ingesting the toxins. Larger predatory fish then eat those smaller fish, concentrating the poison higher up the food chain. Eventually, some of the most desirable reef species — like barracuda, grouper, snapper, and even trevally — can carry enough toxin to make a human seriously ill.
