Fashion in the time of the witch hunts 💀

I'm a bit obsessed with 17th century fashion and I want to share that obsession with all of you. It was a wacky century for style (it was a wacky century in general) but it is EXTREMELY overlooked. People love the renaissance (16th century). People love rococo (18th century). But that weird period in the middle with the ruffs? It's an acquired taste I guess.

Some people find the aesthetics of the period just a bit weird and ugly and I have a theory why that is: we're just not used to seeing it. We are not often exposed to cultural representations of the 17th century. It's a period in our history that we don't like to talk about. A hundred years of witch hunts, genocide, war, and famine just...shouldn't be right in between the renaissance and the enlightenment. It doesn't make sense narratively if you're pushing a view of history that believes in the inevitable forward march of progress. And that is the view of history that is unfortunately in many a popular history book.

But if we step outside of that narrative I think the 17th century is worth looking at. Also the clothes were great.
