Twelve powerful city-states — including Miletos, Byzantion, Lampsakos, and Eresos — borrowed massive sums of money from the sacred Apollo Temple on Delos. Acting like a financial center, the temple stored wealth, issued loans, and kept strict records. But by 377 BC, the debts could no longer be repaid. One after another, the city-states defaulted, leaving the richest sanctuaries of Greece with empty treasuries. For the first time in recorded history, an entire group of states collapsed under the weight of debt.
