This annual event started in 2018 for the nation to show its support for members of the emergency services. For 2020, the event was particularly significant as the City of London recognised the emergency services' commitment in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
999 Day customarily begins at 9am on 9th September with the raising of the 999 flag. This is then followed by a two-minute silence to remember those members of the emergency services who have lost their lives as a result of their duties.
Given COVID-19 restrictions on social gatherings, 2020's event took place virtually. The 999 Flag was raised in Guildhall Yard in a socially distanced private ceremony, which was filmed ahead of the virtual event.
The event includes the footage of the ceremony, and is followed by live speeches from the Lord Mayor and representatives from the emergency services. The event concludes with a panel discussion with members of the services, with a focus on their work during the pandemic.
