This game is a hidden, janky gem. One of the few Vietnam War games with a more or less functional cover system.
The story follows an A-Team special forces unit based at the Nui Pek camp. Missions can generally be divided into two types: jungle missions and everything else.
Jungle missions are awesome and where the game truly shines. Even though the jungle is essentially a corridor, it's densely packed with vegetation and cover that both you and enemies can use. You usually have two or more squadmates with you — a point man to guide you to the mission objective, a radioman for mission updates, a medic who gives you "happy pills" to ease the pain, an engineer who can replenish your ammo (but only for American weapons), and a machine gunner who is... well, the machine gunner. You can issue basic commands to your team, like follow, attack, retreat, etc. Enemies are pre-placed in the missions, but since they react to your actions, every engagement plays out a bit differently. One pesky enemy behind cover can ruin your day.
Unfortunately, the rest of the missions don't hold up as well. On a few open maps, the AI has no idea what to do. Tunnel missions are just boring mazes with confusing layouts and few engagements, while stealth missions are downright awful. Missions where you're alone are also weak, as the game isn't designed to be a standard Rambo-style shooter, and without your team, flanking enemies isn't really possible. These missions just have to be endured.
The radio relay mission is a good one, but it's marred by a terrible design choice — if your squadmates die, it's game over. And they will die a lot.
Last 3 missions also seems to be rushed just to have the game finished.
Weapons are historically accurate, but the iron sights are a bad joke. Aiming only uses the front sight post, which feels off. Combined with some inaccuracy and questionable hit detection, long-distance engagements often come down to luck. There are a few sniper rifles, but since you can only carry one long weapon, their use is limited. Automatic and semi-automatic weapons are the preferred choice. But not machine guns as handling is terrible.
Overall, Vietcong is an awesome game with several terrible missions. There are very few first-person cover shooters — and even fewer set during the Vietnam War.
Digital purchases are unavailable for PC and Xbox. The game is considered abandonware.
