Dawn Mine and Sunset Trail Loop

Описание: Located deep into Millard Canyon is the Dawn Mine. Now a fascinating historical resource, the mine was a successful operation in the first half of the 20th century. Visitors to the San Gabriel Mountains can now visit it via this spectacular hike.

This hike is popular for a reason. The trailhead is easily accessible from Pasadena, and although challenging, most physically fit hikers should be able to complete it. Not to mention, the views, historical significance, and waterfalls keep hikers coming back for more.

There are several ways to visit the mine. The clockwise route on this page has you first go eastward along Millard Creek to the mine, and then loop back via the Sunset Ridge Trail. Another option is to do the route counter-clockwise. This direction is not ideal because you’ll be scrambling down steep rocky sections. Yet another option is to simply hike out-and-back to the mine.

The hike starts out a very small trailhead where Chaney Trail intersects with Mount Lowe Road. There is extremely limited parking here. If it’s full, continue along Chaney Trail to the much larger trailhead for Millard Canyon. If you park at the larger lot, there is a short connector trail with some elevation gain that brings you to the correct trailhead.

You’ll start out along the paved Mount Lowe Road. You’ll soon take a left onto the Sunset Ridge Trail. Eventually you’ll come to a junction where the Sunset Ridge Trail goes right and the Sunset Trail goes left. Take the left option and continue through the canyon. Beware there are several creek crossings here. Depending on the water level, you may want to wear shoes that can get wet.

After another mile from the junction, you’ll come across the mine. There’s plenty to explore here including caves, equipment, building foundations and more. Once you’ve had your fill, you’ll start going southward on the Sunset Ridge Trail. This trail can be difficult, but it offers sweeping views of the area. You’ll then go down some switchbacks, meet back up with Mount Lowe Road, and return to the parking area.

While dogs are allowed on this trail, the terrain may be too challenging for your four-legged companion.
