Dominant chords with b9 and # 9 appear everywhere in jazz, especially when resolving dominant chords to minor keys. In this video, I explain how these two tensions actually belong together and why they almost always appear as a pair.
Using the key of C minor as an example, we look at the G7 chord and explore how the b9 and #9 interact, how they resolve, and why this sound is so common in jazz language. You will see how the # 9 often resolves into the b 9, and how both tensions naturally lead into the minor tonic.
Rather than treating these sounds as isolated theory concepts, this video focuses on hearing their function and understanding how they create motion and tension in real music. We also look at how this appears in tunes like Caravan, where these colors are used extensively.
If you want to understand dominant tension sounds instead of guessing scales or memorizing formulas, this is an essential concept.
