The Indian government has declared that it will wipe out all Maoists from the country by 31st March 2026. In an exclusive interview to the BBC, Devakka, the first woman to rise to the rank of military commander in the armed Maoist insurgency speaks about her journey of joining the insurgency at the age of 13 and spending 25 years in the forests. She surrendered under the government’s amnesty policy in 2014. Now living with the name Shambala Devi, we find out what drove this ordinary tribal from Chhattisgarh to a life-threatening path of violence and extreme politics, and then leave it? What does she think of the insurgency’s aims and violent means now? And what happens in her journey back into a civilian life as she raises her daughter?
