Badrinath is a town in the district Chamoli, in state Uttarakhand of India. It is the oldest Dham in Char Dham of India. It is also part of India's Chota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. Badrinath gets its name from the Badrinath Temple. Badrinath has an average elevation of 10,170 feet and situated on the banks of the holy Alaknanda River. The town lies between the Nar and Narayana mountain ranges.

According to the legend, Adi Shankaracharya discovered a black stone image of Lord Badrinarayan made of Shaligram stone in the Alaknanda River. He originally enshrined it in a cave near the Tapt Kund. In the sixteenth century, the King of Garhwal moved this image to the present temple. In ancient time, this area was full of Badari (wild berry). Lord Vishnu meditated here and Goddess Lakshmi took the form of the Badari tree to provide shade for him from scorching sun.

The mountains around Badrinath are mentioned in the Mahabharata, when the Pandavas were said to have died one by one, when ascending the slopes of a peak in western Garhwal called Swargarohini. The Pandavas passed through Badrinath and village Mana on their way to Swarga.

Inside Badrinath Temple, you'll find a grand pillared mandapa with intricate carvings, leading to the main sanctum housing the black stone deity of Lord Vishnu known as Badrinarayana. Other temples of Mata Mahalaxmi, Lord Hanuman , Sri Karna ghanta and Nar Narayan also available inside Badrinath temple complex.
