Does spending more get better results? See how will these cameras compare to a mobile phone. Here’s a side by side comparison of all four Panasonic cameras and the Moto G5 plus.
For the tests I have photographed the same subject from a variety of different locations using a tripod. All of the cameras were set on standard profile with auto white balance and the lowest ISO possible. All photos are from JPEGs, each photo has been resized to show the whole of the image, plus an enlargement at 200%. This will be more relevant if you plan to crop your images later as it should show any noise or over sharpening present. As we might expect there is an improvement in image quality as the sensor size of the camera increases. The colour balance of the Fz330 and the G7 is slightly out in daylight shots, although the G5plus is the worst in this test.
Here is a quick rundown of the tests.
1) Test one is a wide angle test where part of the building is in shadow and the rest in sunlight. All of the cameras manage to maintain detail in the window and brick work, the phone was more burnt out and also shows signs of over sharpening. The Fz82 has the widest field of view.
2) Test two is another wide angle test, again a difficult subject with the foreground in heavy shadow. All of the cameras showed a good amount of detail, with the Fz2000 and G7 being a bit sharper. This test also shows the difference in colour balance. The fz82 and the Fz2000 being the most accurate.
3) For this next test all of the cameras were set to the same focal length. This should give a direct comparison of image quality. The Fz330 has a tendency to focus on a different part of the subject, as it has done in this shot – note, this maybe a fault on my particular camera. Again the Fz82 and the Fz2000 has the most accurate colour balance.
4) For this test the cameras were set at their maximum zoom. The Fz8 has the longest zoom but needed a higher ISO to maintain a fast shutter speed and so it shows more noise when enlarged. The G7 is less affected by the higher ISO and it had the clearest image. Both the Fz330 and the Fz2000 can use a wider aperture at maximum zoom but the Fz2000 simply doesn’t have a zoom range of the others in photo mode.
5) The final test sees how close each camera can go at maximum zoom. This is useful when you cannot get close to the subject. The G5plus has a nice sharp image but is almost touching the subject. With the Fz82 it was better to use a lower zoom. The G7 has the largest image but the fz2000 is clearer and sharper.
I hope this test is helpful, if you have any questions let me know. Check out my 4k video comparison of these same cameras.
