In the early years the personnel of Shakatak was quite fluid and moving from the Drivin’ Hard album to Nightbirds and on to Invitations the band were still searching for the right chemistry. In particular our girl singers were very busy doing session work for many other artists and although Jill and Jackie were first choice for the band’s recordings and live work on some occasions they were both busy elsewhere.

That was the situation when we recorded Light On My Life for the Nightbirds album and that’s why the Scottish singer Lorna Bannon appeared. Lorna also performed alongside Jill on some TV appearances and on a few live shows.

The arrangement and instrumentation on Light On My Life was heavily influenced by Stevie Wonder’s series of trail-blazing albums, Music Of My Mind, Talking Book, etc., and this is particularly apparent in Bill’s synth work which includes some very cool, liquid bass-synth sounds. In fact, apart from Dick Morrissey’s brilliant soprano saxophone the original recording is virtually a pared down feature for voice & keyboards.

Incidentally, this is also one of Bill's favourite songs of ours so he also recorded a version on his own album State Of The Heart with the great US singer Jefrey Osbourne. Check    • Bill Sharpe - LIGHT OF MY LIFE feat Jeffre...
