WHEN LOVE COSTS
Today’s readings present two powerful moments of human emotion that reveal what faithfulness and love truly demand. In 2 Samuel, David receives the devastating news that Saul and Jonathan have died in battle. His reaction is not triumph over an enemy, but deep, genuine grief. Saul had persecuted David and sought after his life, yet David mourns him as the Lord’s anointed and remembers his contributions to Israel. Jonathan, his closest friend, is mourned with a tenderness that shows the depth of their friendship. David’s lament “How the mighty have fallen,” reveals a heart shaped not by bitterness but by grace, a heart capable of honouring even those who wounded him. His grief teaches us that true love seeks reconciliation, sees dignity even in the flawed, and remains loyal even in loss. In the Gospel, we encounter Jesus facing another kind of sorrow: misunderstanding from His own relatives. As crowds press around Him so intensely that He cannot even eat, His family becomes worried and concludes that He is “out of His mind.” They fail to grasp the urgency and divine purpose of His mission. While their concern may have been sincere, it also reveals how limited human understanding can be when confronted with God’s work. Jesus does not allow their misunderstanding to prevent Him. He continues His ministry with steadfast commitment, revealing that obedience to God sometimes requires enduring criticism, and confusion, even from those closest to us.
Together, these readings highlight a profound truth: authentic love and faithful discipleship often come with a cost. David pays the price through grief and forgiveness; Jesus pays it in misunderstanding and perseverance. Both show that faithfulness is not shaped by the approval of others but by the call of God. We, too, encounter moments when our choices, values, or acts of compassion are misunderstood. Like David, we are called to love beyond hurt. Like Jesus, we are called to remain faithful even when others cannot see what God is doing in us. May we glean from these readings the courage to love generously, the strength to persevere faithfully, and the trust to follow God’s call even when the path is not understood.
Response: Let your face shine on us, Lord.
