The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Pundarikaksha Perumal who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Shenbagavalli. This Temple is considered as one of the 108 Divyadesam that are dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This 2000 Year old Temple was built by Pallava Kings Nandivarman II and Dantivarman. This Temple is older than Srirangam Temple. At first this Temple was built as a fort and later it was converted as a Huge Temple. This Temple is built on a small white hillock and hence the name Thiruvellarai was derived. The Rajagopuram of this Temple was incomplete, so in the Year 2017 The Hindu Endowment Board held a meeting inorder to complete the construction of this Rajagopuram in but no decision has been arrived yet. This Temple is surrounded by a huge Granite Wall. A Swastika shaped Temple Tank was built by Kamban Araiyan around 800 AD. There are separate Shrines for Lord Narashimar, Lord Varahar and Lord Krishna and His Consort Rukmani. There are two gates in this Temple which represents the continious Life Cycle of Human Being.
