Karnataka Government Faces 8-Week Deadline on Datta Peeta Shrine!
On January 7, 2025, the Supreme Court of India gave the Karnataka government an 8-week deadline to decide the dispute surrounding worship rights at the Datta Peeta shrine in Bababudangiri, Chikkamagaluru. The shrine, significant for both Hindus and Muslims, has been at the center of a sensitive legal and religious dispute for years.
In 2018, the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government appointed only a Muslim Mujawar to perform rituals at the shrine, a decision challenged by Hindus who claim the site as a sacred place where Guru Dattatreya meditated. The Karnataka High Court ruled in 2021 that both a Hindu priest and the Mujawar should perform the religious duties, which brought further attention to the issue.
The court’s latest ruling gives the state government the responsibility to resolve this dispute by March 2025, or face penalties. This case is not just about the Datta Peeta shrine but about how India balances religious rights at shared religious sites.
What will the Karnataka government decide? Will both communities find a solution, or will the matter go further? Like, Share, and Subscribe to stay updated with this important case.
