🎮 What is Ghost of Yōtei
Developed by Sucker Punch Productions, published by Sony. Released October 2, 2025, PS5 exclusive.
It’s a standalone sequel/continuation to Ghost of Tsushima, set ~300 years after in 1603 on Ezo (modern Hokkaido), in northern Japan.
You play as Atsu, a mercenary/warrior whose family was killed by a group called the Yōtei Six. The revenge plot is central.
🔧 What’s Different / New
Compared to Ghost of Tsushima, some of the changes and new features:
Weapon system changes: More variety (dual katanas, spears, kusarigama, Ōdachi, bows, matchlock rifle) and more flexibility.
More side activities & exploration: things like shamisen songs to discover landmarks, painting (sumi-e), etc.
There’s a nonlinear structure in choosing which “Yōtei Six” enemies to go after first, giving more player choice in how to progress.
More cinematic presentation modes: Kurosawa Mode returns; plus new ones inspired by directors like Takashi Miike and Shinichirō Watanabe to change the tone / visual or audio feel.
There will be a free Legends multiplayer/co-op mode coming in 2026, like the one in Tsushima.
📊 How it’s been received so far
Critically, very well. It has a Metascore around 87 from over 100 reviews, which is classified as “generally favorable.”
Metacritic
In many reviews, people say that in several ways it improves what Ghost of Tsushima did: better, more varied combat; more vibrant world; side content that feels more connected; visuals & atmosphere being strong points.
👍 What people like
Here are the positives from players & reviews:
Visuals and atmosphere
Many say the game is stunning, with beautiful landscapes, weather effects, lighting, etc. Moments of just exploring and admiring the scenery get praised a lot.
Exploration & side content that feels meaningful
A lot of feedback saying side quests tie more into the central story; doing things off the beaten path feels rewarding.
Combat improvements
Players like the weapon variety, how swapping feels, how fights flow. Some modes and difficulty also praised.
Freedoms & presentation
The nonlinear target-order (which Yōtei Six to fight first), the cinematic presentation modes, the return of “legend” style co-op coming, etc. Many like that the game gives optional twists on how to experience it.
Polish / Technical quality
While there are minor technical criticisms, many say the game feels “polished”, especially for how large it is. Performance and detail in many modes are good.
👎 What people criticize / where it falls short
Not everything is perfect — some of the common complaints or caveats:
Difficulty spikes & balance
Some players say that on higher or “lethal” difficulties, the game can get frustrating; small fights can become punishing. Enemy density or strength can make certain parts feel harder than in Tsushima.
Repetition / similarity with predecessor
Some feel that despite improvements, there are parts of the world or quests that feel familiar or derivative (from Tsushima or generic open-world tropes).
NPC behavior / animation issues
A few people mention that NPCs or some animations are a bit rigid or less natural in certain cutscenes or conversations.
GamerBraves
Story pacing or depth
While the revenge plot is effective, some think that narrative could be more surprising or deeper in places; opening feels abrupt for others.
Tech tradeoffs in graphical modes
E.g. “Performance” vs “Quality vs Ray-Tracing” modes: those that want the visual fidelity sometimes sacrifice FPS or smoother performance. May vary depending on which PS5 version etc
