In 367 AD, Roman Britain faced one of the greatest crises in its history. A series of coordinated attacks from multiple directions plunged the province into chaos in what the historian Ammianus Marcellinus famously described as a barbarica conspiratio — the Barbarian Conspiracy.
Picts broke through the frontier in the north, Saxons raided the eastern and southern coasts, and Irish raiders crossed the sea from Hibernia. At the same time, deserting soldiers and escaped slaves roamed the countryside, while Roman authority seemed to collapse.
The commander of the Saxon Shore was killed, Roman officers were captured, and much of Britain was left defenceless.
It took the arrival of the experienced Roman general Flavius Theodosius to restore order. Crossing the Channel with a relief force, he reorganised the shattered province, defeated the raiders, and re-established Roman control.
But although the immediate crisis was resolved, the events of the Great Conspiracy revealed how fragile Roman rule in Britain had become in the later fourth century.
What you'll learn in this episode:
✅ What the Great Conspiracy of 367 AD actually was
✅ Who the Picts, Saxons, Attacotti, and Scotti were
✅ Why Roman Britain was vulnerable after the revolt of Magnentius
✅ How the Roman military system in Britain temporarily collapsed
✅ The role of intelligence agents known as the areani
✅ How Flavius Theodosius restored Roman control of the province
✅ What the crisis reveals about the decline of Roman power in Britain
