In 1962, McDonald’s franchise owner Lou Groen noticed his sales dropped every Friday in his mostly Catholic neighborhood because his customers weren’t eating meat. To save his struggling restaurant, he created the Filet-O-Fish, a crispy fish sandwich with tartar sauce and cheese. However, McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc wasn’t convinced. Instead, he proposed a different meatless option—the Hula Burger, which was just a grilled pineapple on a bun.
To decide which sandwich would make it to the menu, McDonald’s tested both on Good Friday.
