(004) 121 Year Old Champion Forge Blower Repair
This is just a repair video, not a complete restoration.
I felt extremely fortunate to have been able to pick up this antique hand cranked forge blower that was made over 100 years ago. I got this blacksmith forge blower knowing that it was seized and I fully intended on leaving it that way. I had ordered another one on another social media marketplace, turns out it was a scam. So, in my furry, I decided to see if I could get this one working again.
I am unsure of the model number of this forge blower. However, on the gears it's stamped “1902”
I started by soaking all of the outer screws and bolts with WD-40 for several hours. The handle was removed and the screws for the top cover were taken out. Next, the fan case was split open by removing the screws and square bolts. Getting the set screw the held in the fan was a bit of a pain. (¼” wrench). It's a little tucked under the fan.
I removed the jam nut and adjustment screw from the back and then with some light taps under the fan with a hammer and screwdriver the fan came loose.
After a liberal amount of WD 40, I used a wrench and hammer to gently tap the gear spokes from side to side and the rusted gears broke free. More WD 40 and started shifting the gears back in forth to work it in.
I was so surprised at how smooth this thing cranked once it was all freed up.
I was unable to get the three larger screws out from inside the case. This would have allowed me to remove the gears completely and potentially replaced the gear with the broken teeth.
I reinstalled the fan and made some adjustments to the fins to get the fan to spin without hitting the inside of the case.
I replaced the jam nut and and adjustment screw, tightening the adjustment screw all the way down until the gears were unable to spin freely, then backed it off one half turn.
I added a little transmission fluid to the gear box and finished with the lid and screws.
This thing put out a good amount of air and will work amazing on my coal forge.
