DPS is one of the roles that can be played in group content. There are many different approaches that you can take to fulfilling DPS. However, understanding the basics of the role is the most critical part of being good at it - no matter the approach you take.

You can be a glass cannon or a constant burn that is more survivable. It depends truly on your playstyle. The Elder Scrolls is a "play how you want" game. So, consider this a beginner's guide to dps.

However, before figuring our what suits you, it pays to learn the basic jobs - yes, more than damage output - of a DPS. This will be relevant even through update 35.
