Christine brings a unique perspective as both a former homeschool student and a current homeschool parent. Christine’s story begins with her own homeschooling experience. Born in South Africa and raised in New Zealand, she was homeschooled from age eleven all the way through graduation. While her parents initially used a boxed curriculum, her mother gradually became more eclectic over the years. Today, Christine embraces that same eclectic freedom in her own homeschool. She has learned to lean into her strengths (organization, scheduling, and research) while growing in confidence that there is no single “right way” to homeschool.

As children grow and family circumstances change, the approach must adapt. Read-alouds have been a treasured tradition that create lasting family memories, while watching her children finally grasp difficult concepts is one of her greatest joys. At the same time, she is honest about the challenges. In the early years, juggling toddlers and babies made homeschooling difficult. Now, she faces the mental challenge of balancing her children’s many questions and competing needs throughout the day.

Prioritize core subjects like math and language arts.
Inject fun into every homeschool day.
Be realistic about your energy levels and commitments.
Cut out activities that drain joy instead of adding value.

She emphasizes that consistency and discipline are more important than relying on fleeting motivation. Christine also shares her love of scheduling and explains how her family’s daily routine includes a focus on mornings for core academics, a refreshing break for “morning tea,” and afternoons filled with group learning and read-alouds. She encourages parents to try nontraditional approaches, like six-week terms with short breaks or a four-day school week, to see what works best.

👥 One common stereotype Christine addresses is the question of socialization. Far from being isolated, her children are confident, social, and comfortable interacting with people of all ages. She believes socialization is less about conformity and more about equipping kids to be who God made them to be. Everyday life, community involvement, and family interactions provide ample opportunities to learn social skills.

Christine also offers her best tip for turning around a homeschool day that’s falling apart: stop, take a break, pray, and come back with humility and a fresh perspective.
