On the 16th of June 1969, Malappuram District was established, encompassing the Nilgiris of Tamilnadu to the east, the Arabian Sea to the west, Kozhikode and Wayanad Districts to the north, and Palakkad and Thrissur Districts to the south. The district covers a geographical area of 3550 sq. kms, accounting for 9.13% of the total area of the state, ranking it third in terms of size within the state.
